A Place for Everything: Anna Wilson in conversation with Isabel Losada
29 June @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmFree
Anna Wilson grew up in a house that was loving, even if her mum was ‘a little eccentric’. They knew to keep things clean, to stay quiet, and to look the other way when things started to get ‘a bit much for your mum’.
It’s only when her mother reached her 70s, and Anna had a family of her own, that the cracks really started to appear. More manic. More irrational. More detached from the world. And when her father, the man who calmed and cajoled her mother through her entire life, became unwell, the whole world turned upside down.
In this salon, Anna and Isabel discuss Anna’s biography A Place for Everything – my mother, autism and me, which tells the story of her mother’s undiagnosed autism, speaking frankly about what life was like, about the person behind the disorder, those big unspoken family truths, and what it means to care for our parents in their final years.
Anna Wilson has published over 50 books for children and young teens. She has been shortlisted for the Hull Libraries Award, the Lancashire Book of the Year Award, the ALCS Educational Writers’ Award, the Teach Primary Book Awards and the Hampshire SLS Awards.
As well as writing for young people, Anna has also published her memoir for adult readers: A Place for Everything – my mother, autism and me, which has been reviewed as “a seminal work in this area” by the world expert in autism in women, Professor Tony Attwood. It was Editor’s Choice in The Bookseller magazine where it was described as “a vividly told and profoundly affecting memoir” and it was featured on BBC Woman’s Hour.
Anna also has extensive experience in teaching creative writing at university level and running writing workshops in schools. She is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow for Exeter University at Penryn and a tutor for the Arvon Foundation, the HarperCollins Author Academy and the Writers’ Block in Cornwall.

Isabel Losada is a British author of narrative non-fiction. Her most recent full-length book, The Joyful Environmentalist: How to Practise without Preaching, explores the way we bank, heat our homes, travel, garden, dress, holiday, shop, lobby, volunteer, eat and furnish our homes. Isabel shows that all the actions we can take in order to live a 1.5 degree lifestyle, and help our planet, are also those which will most enrich our lives. It’s also the only book about environmentalism that makes the reader laugh and won the ‘Best Overall Book on Sustainability 2022’ at The Independent.
